This past week a clip-on Twitter, see below, has caused some ruckus where Douglas Wilson and Aaron Renn discuss the lie of servant leadership. Which the lie is essentially this–that when you turn a man’s mission into exclusively serving his wife and kids.
The clip below is from Man Rampant, an exclusive series on Amazon Prime Video.
Wilson seeking to add some additional context, beyond a sound bite from Twitter, wrote this article.
For man was not made from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.The Apostle Paul (1 Corithians 11:8-9)
Are Wilson and Renn saying that men shouldn’t have an attitude of serving others? Of course not, that would go against a key Christian ethic. Both men give a hearty amen to serving others, and the point they are making is one which is taboo in this secular culture, and even in the church.
When a man loves his wife well it is through the authority that has been given to him by the example of Christ. To take the concept of putting an adjective in front of leadership such as “servant” we often are left with a husband coming under the authority of the wife. Which is very different.
