A story I hear often from brothers and sisters in Christ is the bad theology they learned while growing up in youth ministry. I too can recall erroneous and sadly heretical theology I picked up that had to be unlearned as I got older.
The Gospel Coalition gives 8 reasons why youth ministers should attend seminary. Here are a few key points I took away and added to:
- Seminary can be a means to ensure you are in ministry for the long haul versus picking up a job while you are young and “relevant”
- You’ll learn the foundations and truths you need to minister to God’s people, and won’t hurt anyone with bad doctrine.
- It will give you a chance to become more rooted in the faith and various beliefs therein. Seminary should help crystalize your theological stances and understands those of others.
