Abiding in Christ is frequently misunderstood, and many tips/steps/rules have been applied to teaching on this topic that leads to a sense of mystical or unexplainable experiences. This leaves the Christian wondering, am I really abiding in Christ?
Sinclair Furguson, from scripture, exegetes a few concrete realities of what this looks like:
- We united with Christ by faith. This is an active and personal uniting with Christ by faith. John 14:12
- Being united to Christ means being obedient to him. Simply put, his words should fill our minds, direct our wills, and transform our affections. Colossians 3:16, Ephesians 5:18
- Abide in Christ’s love especially as it relates to the expression of Christ’s love for us displayed on the cross. Simple obedience is the fruit and evidence of love for him. John 15:10-14
- Submit to the pruning knife of God in his providences by which he cuts away all disloyalty in order that we might remain in Christ all the more wholeheartedly.
Summarizing even further Ferguson’s teaching–by faith in Christ, knowing and following his word, abiding in his love and submitting to him as Lord over our life is how we abide in Christ.
